Working in conjunction with London’s Transport Museum, we have been making made-to-order moquette furniture & cushions for well over 15 years.
After a chance meeting at a Trade Fair many years ago, we were presented with the chance to work with moquette: Not being familiar with the term, we learned that moquette is the woollen upholstery fabric used on buses, trains, trams and the like. And it wasn’t just any moquette either, this was from London’s Transport Museum and all the rich history it carries.
It’s easy to see why the name moquette comes from a French term for carpet; the moquette is extremely thick and bulky, so initially it was a challenge to work with. Cutting and sewing fabric as thick as this, takes a lot more effort than regular upholstery fabric, so we started on small pieces at first; Upholstered cubes, chairs with upholstered pads, which went pretty well. Together with the museum we then diversified into footstools and cushions and then bigger pieces followed like blanket boxes and benches and then eventually armchairs and sofas.
As the moquette designs are so original and in many cases iconic, the upholstered furniture looks extremely unique when finished. Whether it’s in a bold design like District, Barman, Overground or Elizabeth Line or a slightly more subtle pattern like Routemaster, Straub or Greenline, the finished results are very distinctive.
